VHB Tape vs Screws: When Tape Is Stronger (and When to Reach for the Drill)
VHB tape often outperforms screws for bonding smooth, rigid surfaces β but knowing when each is right prevents costly mistakes.
VHB (Very High Bond) tape can genuinely replace screws, rivets and brackets for many light-to-medium mounting jobs β but whether it should depends on the substrate, the load direction, and what happens if the joint fails. Get the match right and the bond is permanent and clean; get it wrong and you'll be chasing the fixing across a car park.
What actually makes VHB tape so strong?
Standard double-sided tape uses a thin film of pressure-sensitive adhesive. VHB tape is different: it's a dense acrylic foam core saturated with adhesive all the way through. That foam compresses slightly when pressed onto a surface, filling micro-gaps and creating contact across the whole bonding area rather than just at the high points. The adhesive then cross-links over 24β72 hours, building to its full rated strength.

That last point matters for anything that moves, vibrates or expands and contracts with heat: car body panels, signage fixed to external faΓ§ades, or trim around engine bays.
Screws create a mechanical interlock that doesn't depend on surface chemistry at all. They also allow easy removal and adjustment. But they concentrate stress at a single point, require access to both sides or a solid substrate to thread into, leave a permanent hole, and can work loose under vibration unless you add thread-lock compound.
When VHB tape wins outright
Thin or hollow substrates you can't drill into easily. Fixing a parking-sensor holder back onto a bumper, mounting a dash cam to a windscreen, or attaching trim to a door card β in each case there's no sensible place to put a screw, and drilling risks cracking the plastic or voiding a warranty. VHB tape was built for exactly these jobs.
Smooth, non-porous, rigid surfaces. Glass, powder-coated steel, aluminium, GRP and most automotive paints are ideal substrates. The tape makes full contact, the adhesive has plenty of surface energy to grab onto, and the bond area is large relative to the load.
Vibration-heavy environments. A screw transmits vibration directly; the foam core in VHB tape damps it. That's why vehicle manufacturers use acrylic foam tape on production lines for body-side mouldings and mirror assemblies β not because it's cheaper than a screw, but because it actually performs better under road vibration over time.
Aesthetic finishes you don't want to damage. No holes, no visible fixings, no risk of paint cracking around a drill entry point.
When screws (or another mechanical fixing) are the right call
Be honest here: tape has real limits and ignoring them is how things fall off walls.
Structural or life-safety loads. A shelf holding 30 kg of books, a handrail, a roof rack, anything structural in a vehicle β use the specified mechanical fixing. VHB tape is not a substitute for engineering-rated fasteners where a failure could injure someone.
Porous, dusty or low-energy surfaces. Bare brick, raw concrete, rough timber and many untreated plastics (polyethylene, polypropylene, PTFE) don't give VHB tape enough surface energy to build a reliable bond, even after cleaning. You can use a bonding primer to improve this, but if you're already that deep into prep, a mechanical fixing is often simpler.
High-peel situations. VHB tape resists shear (forces running parallel to the bond) very well, but it's more vulnerable to peel (forces that lever one surface away from another at an angle). A large flat panel bonded in shear is fine; a hook that flexes and peels at the tape edge under load is not.
High sustained temperature. Most acrylic foam tapes start to soften above around 90β120 Β°C depending on the product. Near engine components or industrial heat sources, check the tape's rated temperature range and don't exceed it.
When you definitely need to remove and reposition the fixing. VHB is designed to be permanent. Removal is possible but requires effort and the right technique (dental floss or fishing line worked behind the foam, plus isopropyl alcohol). If the fixing needs to come off cleanly on a weekly basis, a mechanical fastener or a lower-tack repositionable tape is the better choice.
How to get the bond right β surface prep is everything
The most common reason VHB tape fails is skipping surface prep, not a product weakness. Follow these steps and the bond will outlast many mechanical alternatives:
- Degrease thoroughly. Wipe both surfaces with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and a lint-free cloth. Remove all oil, dust, silicone polish and release agents. Spyder Tape kits include an IPA wipe precisely because this step is non-negotiable.
- Use an adhesion promoter on difficult substrates. The adhesive-promoter wipe included in our kits helps the tape grab onto painted surfaces, plastics and glass that IPA alone might leave slightly low-energy.
- Apply firm, even pressure. Press the tape down with a roller or the heel of your hand, working from one end to avoid air pockets. Aim for at least 15 N/cmΒ² of applied pressure β roughly the pressure of leaning your body weight through your palm.
- Allow dwell time. The bond builds over 24β72 hours. Avoid loading the joint immediately after application β ideally leave it overnight before putting any stress on it.
- Temperature matters at application. Don't apply VHB tape below about 10 Β°C. Cold surfaces prevent the adhesive from flowing into surface texture properly. Warm the substrate first if you're working outdoors in winter.
A practical comparison: mounting a number plate vs mounting a shelf bracket
Number plate on a car: load is almost pure shear (the plate hangs parallel to the bonding surface), the substrate (plastic bumper or painted metal) is smooth and accessible for cleaning, and the consequence of failure is annoying but not dangerous. VHB tape is the clean, professional choice β no drilling required, no rust risk at the fixing point, looks better. Many OEM installations use exactly this approach.
Shelf bracket on a plasterboard wall holding a heavy TV: the fixing is in peel (the load levers the bracket away from the wall at the top edge), plasterboard is porous and soft, and a failure means the TV hits the floor. Use a mechanical fixing into the stud, or a proper cavity anchor rated for the load. Tape is not appropriate here regardless of brand or grade.
The pattern is consistent: tape wins on rigid, smooth, non-porous surfaces where the load is in shear and the consequence of failure is manageable. Screws win everywhere else.
Common questions
How strong is VHB tape compared to screws?
VHB tape distributes load across the whole bonded area, which often gives it a higher total shear strength than a single screw of equivalent bonding footprint. However, screws outperform tape in peel and tension, and they don't degrade if the surface wasn't cleaned properly. The comparison is less about raw numbers and more about which failure mode matters for your specific job.
Can VHB tape be used outdoors permanently?
Yes β professional acrylic foam tapes are designed for outdoor exposure and resist UV, moisture and temperature cycling. This is why they're used for exterior signage, vehicle body mouldings and architectural glazing. The key is that the initial bond must be made to a clean, dry surface at a temperature above roughly 10 Β°C; once cured, the joint handles weather well.
Why is my double-sided tape not sticking?
The most common causes are surface contamination (oil, silicone, dust or release agents that weren't removed before application), applying at too low a temperature, not pressing firmly enough, or using a consumer tape on a surface that needs a professional acrylic foam product. Clean the surface with IPA, use an adhesion promoter if needed, apply firm pressure, and give the bond 24 hours before loading it.
